Cancun is a very popular Mexican city on the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean coast. Its airport receives more than 15 million international visitors and houses approximately 36,000 hotel rooms!
In Cancun, there are many world-class all-inclusive resorts to choose from to stay close to the beaches, restaurants, and nightclubs.
What kind of food is Cancun known for?
Cancun, being a globally famous tourist destination, offers the best experience for both local and international cuisine.
One of the things Mexicans pride themselves on is their gastronomic tradition. Its world-famous cuisine is just one of the reasons travelers keep going back to Mexico.
These are some dishes you should definitively try when you visit Cancun:
- Tacos: rolled corn tortillas filled with different ingredients and types of meat. A favorite among Mexican street food. Unmissable!
- Tamales: a traditional Mesoamerican dish that can be prepared baked, buried, or steamed (the most common in Cancun) and wrapped in different leaves, such as a banana leaf or corn husk. Yucatecan tamales are filled with different ingredients such as corn dough, pork, chicken, turkey, egg, chaya (tree spinach), pumpkin seeds, and local beans.
- Cochinita Pibil: baby pork marinated in achiote paste, orange juice, and lime; served in corn tortillas.
- Tikin Xic: a delicious traditional Yucatecan seafood dish consisting of grilled fish marinated in achiote paste, wrapped in banana leaves.
- Lime Soup: a typical local dish that consists of chicken broth seasoned with cloves, cumin, and oregano. This broth is filled with chicken, onion, tomato, and sweet chili, flavored with slices of lime, and accompanied by fried tortillas.
Where to eat in Cancun?
For street food, we recommend going to Parque las Palapas in downtown Cancun. You can find live music, clowns, theater, food carts, a big food court, and loads of joy. Be sure to visit this park at least once during your visit. Mexican street food is tasty and cheap!
The Hotel Zone has numerous superb international cuisine restaurants such as Puerto Madero (Argentinian steaks and seafood), Fantino (Mediterranean), and Porfirio’s (Mexican).
Many of the top international restaurants in Cancun are within the all-inclusive resorts.
